Introduction

Onto the next release of the weekend and I finished watching the new Hindi film Tiku Weds Sheru which is now streaming on Amazon Prime. The films Kangana Ranaut’s debut as a producer and I was quite looking forward to see on what the film has in store for me. I must admit that I wasn’t very impressed by the trailer which seemed to be confused as to what it wanted to showcase. But at the same time it was also intriguing to note on the possibilities of what the film had to offer and whether there was a unique love story in place!

Tiku Weds Sheru stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui who is amidst a wobbly period wherein he has been experimenting a little more than I would have liked. His previous love story Jogira Sara Ra Ra was an eye sore whereas Afwaah I had really liked. More importantly, I wanted to still give Nawaz a chance in the romantic genre wherein he had Avneet Kaur for company. Now  first up, the casting didn’t seem to be right considering the age gap between the two actors(yes, Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan are guilty of the same too before someone points out). But my benefit of doubt was always with the film considering that it may have elements to justify this casting. So with much skepticism I ventured into Tiku Weds Sheru, does it manage to impress, lets find out.

Story & Screenplay

Tiku Weds Sheru follows the story of two dreamers in search of stardom, who are caught in the underbelly of Bollywood and drugs. The story here did have an interesting premise, almost presenting itself as a dark satire. But the writing was so confused on what it was hinting at, that it ended up being a hot mess! There are some amount of skills that go into writing a dark satire. The writing needs to be sharp, knowing exactly what it wants to address. And this is where Tiku Weds Sheru fails miserably. There is no definitive structure to the film that is comprised of stray moments, as opposed to an organic flow in the drama. The screenplay standing at just about a 110 minutes(thankfully), doesn’t impress with its writing one bit, being caught between a Rom-Com and a dark satire.

The drama opens with the introduction of the two protagonists, both of whom are shown to be dreamers yet either caught up with family issues or barely being able to make ends meet. Destiny brings them together wherein they eventually do get married in hope of earning and working together. But somehow, the drama just doesn’t gel well with respect to its surroundings. One of the key ingredients of the drama is its tone, and it is important to maintain it right throughout even if you happen to switch genres. And that is what the writing doesn’t do here. The humour is far too faded and lesser said about the romance, the better!

The romance between the two leads makes for the most cringe-worthy moments in recent times. There was an awkward energy which hindered with the organic relationship blossoming onscreen. The writing should have catered to the moments between them while taking into account their age differences too(Nawaz is 49, Avneet is 21 in real life). Yet, when you make the couple kiss(again nothing wrong in that), it needed to be done with a little more sensitivity. Also, there are so many loopholes which aren’t catered too. The character of Avneet Kaur is pregnant yet she does fling herself out of the cab, drink alcohol and dance like the baby is just a mere pillow. I could excuse the last point, but seriously did the writers not account for the first two? It made me wonder on whether I had missed a conversation of the baby passing away which wasn’t the case. Such weak writing that lacks detailing, I wonder how this was green lit?

The drama takes a dark turn in the third act after far too much time is wasted in establishing the relationship between the couple in the first two acts. The third act which was supposedly dark should have been introduced earlier which would have given time to further flesh it out and dig deeper into the darkness of the film industry. Instead, the events were so surface level that it didn’t evoke any sort of sentiment. It made me disgusted too which was elevated to the next level in its climax! Now picture this – an uncomfortable Nawaz being made to dance in a woman’s costume and save the day. This while there is a random shootout that takes place. Either I was not in my senses or the writers! Ridiculous is the word! Somewhere a promising tale was buried in a hot mess that was creating in the screenplay! The final scene was a good one and that was the essence of the tale that went missing!

Dialogues, Music & Direction

The dialogues are a cringe fest in itself, poor and far too indulgent. The music is the strongest point of the film and some beautifully woven songs make their way in the narrative. The BGM is decent and does enough to keep you moderately invested despite the weak writing. The cinematography and editing are decent too. Director Sai Kabir misses the mark with respect to the tone of the drama. As a result, the drama turns out to be a confused cringe-fest and I refuse to believe that there wasn’t a solid story here. In reality, it was buried in the chaos!

Performances

The performances are pretty good here. Vipin Sharma as Shahid manages to shine. Khushi Bharadwaj as Sana has a sweet presence in a job well done. Avneet Kaur is a talented performer whose name you will hear in future too. As Tiku, she is playful and immature(in a good way), and manages to strike a chord with the emotions. Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Sheru also does a good job but is awkward in dancing and a few romantic scenes. The issue was the awkward energy between the two with no real justification on why the two were cast in the first place. Either Nawaz was too old for his character or Avneet was too young, one of the two was true!

Conclusion

Despite some good performances and music, Tiku Weds Sheru is one of the most cringe-worthy and confused love story of the year in a drama that fails to impress. I did feel a good story was buried beneath this hot mess. Available on Amazon Prime.
