Introduction

It is Tuesday and still early in the week and I still did have a couple of leftovers from last week. With that, I finished watching the new Tamil film Soppana Sundari which is now streaming on Hotstar. And one of my main motivations of opting for the film was Aishwarya Rajesh who I can’t stop raving about. Over the weekend I had watched her in the Tamil film Farhana and she did hold that film together so well with her acting chops. And she has been doing that time and again with multiple films. If only her choices are slightly more refined, she would be that one bankable force just through her acting.

The first look of Soppana Sundari did tell me that this film was in the dark comedy space, something that reminded me of the Nayanthara starrer Kolamaavu Kokila, a film that I had quote enjoyed. So I did have my hopes up before venturing into Soppana Sundari which my expectations being of nothing less than a joyride. So then does Soppana Sundari manage to impress, lets find out.

Story & Screenplay

Soppana Sundari follows the story of a family who wins a luxury car in a lucky draw. This until many others emerge to stake their claims on the prized possession. The story here had all the ingredients of been a brilliant comedy thriller. Hell may I add, even the screenplay standing at a shade under 2 hours may have been written well on paper. But the execution is quite weak thus reducing the overall product by a big margin.

The start itself was wobbly with the entire drama being staged around a lucky draw. While you are introduced to the protagonist who is shown to be from a lower middle class, staying with her mother and unmarried sister(who is mute), there is no sense of world building. I can almost guarantee the fact that had this been a Malayalam film, the characters would have been developed better with a strong sense of purpose. While the humour is prevalent, the editing is so poor that an ongoing track is almost paused to start a new track. So out of nowhere, there is a flashback that introduces the viewers to a newer set of characters. And I did wonder on whether this non-linear narration was necessary. It is always tricky to opt for this narration and if not done well, it can derail the entire product.

The proceedings are watchable but that grip in the screenplay is missing. The writing does get slightly convoluted after the introduction of multiple conflicts and I wished there was a little clarity as far as the events unfolding were concerned. It is one thing to make the events far fetched and something totally different to make them incoherent that would eventually leave you distracted. And the writing was guilty of this fact. Having said that, the writing is successful in generating bits of the quirky humour that always keeps the ball rolling consistently. The entire police station sequence of a fraudster sent to retrieve the car keys was indeed hilarious and it did form some of the best moments of the film.

The events unfolding are inconsistent as the screenplay moves to and fro even in its final act. The drama did seem slightly staged and artificial and the weakest execution was in its final act that was far too simplistic and largely distracting. I wish the writing had a little more bite and texture which would have enhanced the overall product in a big way. But overall, the drama was quite underwhelming, that ended up being a wasted opportunity.

Dialogues, Music & Direction

The dialogues are quirky and definitely will make you chuckle. The music is alright but nothing memorable about it. The BGM is decent but again could have been better. The cinematography also had a tad too many slow-mos that didn’t quite do justice to the written material. The editing, as mentioned previously was its weakest link. Director S G Charles misses the mark as far as the execution is concerned. I did feel that a more accomplished director like Nelson or Lokesh Kanagaraj would have nailed the subject better.

Performances

The performances are pretty good here. Sha Ra as Maaran and Karunakaran as Durai do manage to tickle your funny bone.  Sunil Reddy as Kannan is pretty good in a not so likable character.  Lakshmi Priya as Thenmozhi is impressive and she does a good job. Deepa Shankar as Selvi does go slightly overboard with her performance. Aishwarya Rajesh as Agalya is excellent and once again puts her best foot forward despite a crumbling product.

Conclusion

Soppana Sundari is a quirky comedy that really should have been executed better. Available on Hotstar.
