The Old Guard
There are a host of webseries that are out today and I have already watched and reviewed one of them. But before I get to atleast one of the other two, I happened to pick a movie to maintain the ‘two reviews each day of the weekend’ policy. And so I have just finished watching, the Netflix original, The Old Guard. Is it worth your time, stay tuned.
The Old Guard is the story of a bunch of immortal mercenaries who are left to defend themselves and their secret from an evil pharmacist who will stop at nothing. The story is decent and to be honest I wasn’t here for that. Tackling an interesting concept, the screenplay is cliched to say the least but it is the action that is gruesome and attractive that makes you sit through this. Unlike Extraction though, this one has a lot of breathing space between any two action onslaughts which is a bit of a negative. The dialogues are average and a decent use of the BGM. Director Gina Prince-Bythewood has done a good job with the proceedings and the film does deliver on its promise – loads of action!
Chiwete Ejiofore as Copley is nicely restrained. Harry Melling as Merrick is decent but the impact of a villain is sorely missed. Luca Marinelli as Nicky and Marwan Kenzari as Joe are effective. Matthias Schoenaerts as Booker is pretty good. Kiki Layne as Nile is outstanding and can the girl kick some ass! And Charlize Theron as Andy is smooth in all the combat sequences and an absolute pleasure to watch!
The Old Guard is a decent watch meant strictly for action junkies. Available on Netflix!
