Introduction

Onto the next release of the weekend and I finished watching the new Hindi film Jogira Sara Ra Ra starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui. By now we all know what a prolific performer Nawaz is but off late I have been critical of his choices too. While it is perfectly fine to try out new roles, I feel it is imperative to not lose out on your USP which is what Nawaz was guilty of lately. Be it in the forgetable Heropanti 2 wherein his character of the antagonist was marred by an over the top persona or even in the superb film Afwaah wherein he was clearly uncomfortable mouthing English dialogues(although his performance was stupendous). But one thing is for sure that he is never short of effort which is what I like in him as a performer. In one of his experimentations once again, Jogira Sara Ra Ra marks the entry of Nawaz in an out and out Rom-Com. Does the film manage to impress, lets find out.

Story & Screenplay

Jogira Sara Ra Ra follows the story of a man tasked by a woman to get rid of her marriage until both start facing consequences. The story here is quite dull from the onset and I was wondering on why this film was green lit in the first place. The screenplay standing at about 2 hours reaffirms my point on how pointless this film actually is. It is unfunny and and an absolute royal mess that I didn’t know whether to laugh at the characters onscreen or to laugh at my fate.

The drama does open with the introduction of the protagonist who stumbles upon an uninvited guest in a wedding that he is organizing. After briefly introducing the viewers to the principal characters the conflict is introduced straight up. And it is one of the most dull films that I have been witness to in recent times in the name of comedy. Situational comedy is actually an art of creating situations which are funny instead of weaving comic sequences in the form of situations. When the creative decision is to opt for the latter then it does spell doom, more often than not. And that is what transpires in this drama.

The proceedings are just about watchable in the first hour with one odd laugh here and there but I felt nothing for the characters and neither could the characters justify their antics through this innocuous drama. The comedy was forced and didn’t hit home at all. I also was surprised at the pitch of the drama with almost all characters(except Mimoh) shouting on top of their voices. And ironically, the most effective in comedy was Mimoh which says a lot about the flawed approach of the writers. Screaming on top of their voices doesn’t guarantee you laughter, in fact it nullifies even the most remote chances of the humour landing.

As it turned out, the ‘best’ moments in the film were in the first hour because the second hour was simply unbearable. Even the basic writing was off and it did seem to be dragged possibly as the writers may have run out of ideas midway through. The final act tol was ridiculously bad and convenient and made absolutely so sense whatsoever. Which brings me to the point, was this film absolutely necessary to be made? How was the substandard script locked? Is the bar of entertainment so low? I rest my case.

Dialogues, Music & Direction

The dialogues are hammy and ridiculously bad in the name of comedy. The music is forgetable where none of the songs standout. In fact, one song seemed to br misplaced in the film and the vibe of the song did not gel with the drama at all. The BGM is adequate and nothing much to shout about. The cinematography and editing are alright to say the least. Director Kushan Nandy is usually a safe bet given his previous works but here he misses the mark in a very big way. There were no moments created neither was there any sequence that had me even chuckling and that is a red mark in the report card of the director.

Performances

The performances are way too over the top here. From all the performers only Mimoh Chakraborty and up to an extent Sanjay Mishra leave a mark. Neha Sharma looks pretty as Dimple but she does go overboard with her antics. Even a prolific performer like Nawazuddin Siddiqui was trying to be funny as opposed to humour coming naturally to his character. I did feel sad for Nawaz as the effort was there but to little rewards.

Conclusion

Jogira Sara Ra Ra is an unfunny mess in a drama which is entirely pointless to say the least. The bar of entertainment cannot be so low! Available in a theatre near you.
