Gaanth: Chapter 1
Introduction
It was in the year 2018 that the entire region of New Delhi was shook by a rather strange occurence that featured an entire family found hanging at their home. The deaths termed as ‘The Burari Deaths’ was a significant mystery involving superstition and faith while also providing enough fodder for them being a mass murder or suicide of sorts. And while the case was eventually concluded as a mass suicide, in the year 2021 the outstanding Netflix documentary House Of Secrets caught the imagination of the nation all over again. The mood of the documentary to inculcate a sense of horror was indeed a novel idea, and it made for a rather shivering watch back in the day. Yet, the fascination of The Burari Deaths was just too good to pass it off only as a Netflix documentary. And hence, there were other shows been made on the similar subject, the notable one being Aakhri Sach which was a diluted account of the actual deaths. So when I did get to know that Jio Cinema is backing another project titled Gaanth : Chapter 1 – Jamnaa Paar based again on The Burari Deaths, I must admit that I wasn’t too excited. Although its starcast did make me hopeful to an extent, a part of me thought that what was the point in beating a dead horse all over again. With low hopes I ventured into Gaanth : Chapter 1 which is now streaming on Jio Cinema, does it spring up a surprise, let’s find out.
Story & Screenplay
Loosely based on The Burari Deaths, Gaanth – Chapter 1 follows the story behind the investigation that transpires following the death of a family in Delhi who is found hanging from their ceiling. With the crime scene compromised and the case gathering undue eyeballs, would the cops be able to get to the bottom of it?? The story here didn’t have a novel idea to begin with but I was pleasantly surprised at the number of twists and turns along with different perspectives provided in the story that accounted for a rather thrilling watch! This was true even at a psychological level given that the writing didn’t restrict itself to the actual turn of incidents, often using it only as a referential base and later fictionalizing the entire account. The important of this factor is that I as a viewer did not quite know in which direction the show is headed, even as the screening standing at 8 episodes of roughly 30 odd minutes accounted for a rather compelling watch. My only issue lay in the fact that the case wasn’t concluded in this season(ofcourse this ain’t a spoiler, the title says Chapter 1) that was a bit of a dampener for me.
The drama doesn’t quite get to the best of starts with the standard trope of the introduction of a normal family shown to be anxious for reasons best known to them. And you quite knew what was coming given that the very next scene features them hanging from their ceiling. Parallely, you are also introduced to the protagonist, an alcoholic cop who is assigned a duty to get to the bottom of the mystery. To his dismay, the crime scene is compromised even as you are tactfully introduced to a few of the other principal characters. And while this seemed to be a safe start, it didn’t exactly hook me partly also because I was privy with the case at hand. But things slowly begin to get interesting as the investigation proceeds, and offers a twist every now and then to capture your attention. Here I must also add that the bylanes of Delhi have been laced with a haunting setting that adds wonderfully to the ambience of the drama.
The proceedings are engaging and enthralling after the first episode particularly when the drama presents itself to possibly branch out in multiple directions. So the possibility lay in this being a mass murder, a suicide or something related to superstition even as the show accounts for a shadowy presence in the neighbourhood. To top it, the introduction of many other characters definitely adds to the chaos even as I found myself uncannily engaged in this compelling drama. The writers do enough to scratch the possibility of every motive, be it that of superstition or in the wake of religion or something drastically different, while also tactfully adding a roadblock at the end of every motive. So the arena was set with the drama heading to any direction which would potentially surprise you. The plight of the cops working round the clock also offers a searing commentary as an underlayer. This, while there are unforeseen twists at regular junctures in the screenplay along with sensationalism involving the media.
About two-thirds into the first season, the writers begin to slightly change the direction of the case with a possibility that it slightly swayed away from the core setup done to that point. As a result, there is a slight lag in the screenplay which might be intentional but probably necessary for the course intended towards the setup for the next season. There are a tad too many details infused in the narrative but thankfully, the core thread remains intact and it continues to remain the strongest aspect of the drama. This results in a thrilling final act(of the season) with a cliffhanger that made me even more curious about its next chapter. The hints provided absolutely turn the drama on its head! Overall, the screenplay is well written by springing in a nice little surprise along the way.
Dialogues, Music & Direction
The dialogues are conversational but tackling various aspects of religion, superstition and politics that definitely contributes in making it an engrossing watch. The BGM is terrific and really adds to the urgency in the drama with quite a few pulsating scores. The cinematography creates an ambience of mystery through its frames that were just so important in the context of the drama. The faded dull filters to the drama add to the murky surroundings of the drama that indeed contributes for a wonderful watch. The editing is crisp and sharp for most parts in the screening, something that ensures that the drama remains thrilling throughout its runtime. Director Kanishk Varma does a brilliant job in constructing a fictionalized account of a case that had once caught the imagination of the country. And his efforts can also be classified as phenomenal given that the premise wasn’t novel, having earlier been attempted on celluloid too. His ability to create an ambience of mystery by infusing it with thrilling twists and turns amidsts some interesting characters was truly commendable to witness. The direction is really good here.
Performances
The performances are wonderful to witness by the ensemble cast. Anmol Arora as Haseena really leaves a mark with her incredible act that was filled with mystery and intrigue. Anurekha Bhagat makes her presence felt as well. Gopal Datt as Amish, the flamboyant and corrupted journalist is wonderful to witness particularly because he ensured that his character did not end up being a caricature. Ajit Singh Pehlawat as Sunny is sincere and earnest. Rajesh Tailang as Trilok, Sidharth Bhardwaaj as Jeevan and Naved Aslam as Sanjay lend commendable support. Neha Iyer as Rohini is assertive and does an incredible job in a character that has an early transformation but manages to remain earnest until the end. Shravan Boranna as Yashwant definitely manages to shine in a good job done overall.
Saloni Batra as Satyawati is absolutely brilliant to watch with her understated approach, in a performance that is laced with sincerity. This is another winner of a performance after Animal, wherein she is wonderfully restrained. Monika Panwar as Sakshi is such a natural actor and perhaps one of the standout performers for me here. She is outstanding right from attaining a perfect dialect and showcasing her acting chops with her body language and expressions. She was an absolute joy to witness. Manav Vij as Gadar Singh delivers a powerful act with subtle and nuanced undertones. He has always been a phenomenal actor and here he yet again provides a timely reminder of the same. He also showcases his vulnerability with perfection while maintaining his towering and commanding demeanor throughout the course of the drama. This performance of his was one to cherish and savour!
Conclusion
Boasting of great performances, Gaanth : Chapter 1 – Jamnaa Paar is a compelling and thrilling fictionalized reconstruction of The Burari Deaths that makes for a wonderful watch. Available on Jio Cinema.
