Introduction

Onto one of the leftovers from the weekend and I finished watching the new English film Evil Dead Rise in a theatre near me. It has been ages since I have been privy to an out and out horror flick. Horror as a genre has undergone a lot of changes over the years. What did start with jump scares slowly transformed into high concept horrors like Get Out or Nope. While this was just one section, the other section did include the slasher genre with films like Scream or I Know What You Did Last Summer and the supernatural genre with films like The Conjuring. But the classic horror has to be body horror with films like the Saw series. So clearly, horror is a space that has expanded into sub-genres while also breaking a barrier and merging with other genres like comedies or romance.

Having said that, the fun of a packed theatre screaming and covering their faces is an absolute joy to be a part of. It did happen earlier with the slasher film Scream 6 which not only did nail but also added bouts of innovations in the existing horror space. This weekend, when I did get to know about the horror film Evil Dead Rise and a glowing positive word of mouth, I was excited. A franchise which had started way back in 1983 and has seen a recent reboot as well, did return with a lot of promise in 2023.

Now I haven’t watched any of its previous films of the franchise and so I did not quite know what to expect. On researching a little, I did get to know that one could watch Evil Dead Rise as an independent film as well. And so, I was really curious on what the film had to offer and whether it would scare the living day lights out of me. Now that I have finished watching Evil Dead Rise, here are my two cents on it.

Story & Screenplay

Evil Dead Rise follows the story of a family who accidently unleash bloodthirsty demons who begin an attack on their apartment by hunting down everyone in their premises. The story here which primarily takes place over one night is not quite novel in its concept. Demons and the supernatural are classic integredients of a horror flick. The trick lies in the treatment and that is where this drama works quite well. The screenplay standing at just over 90 minutes does make for a quick watch that doesn’t quite waste time in its narrative.

The drama does open with a typical premise of a slasher horror film. A group of friends vacationing in a remote location until one of them does attack and hunt down the group. This for me was a cliched start and it didn’t quite hit home by any stretch of imagination. The setting does change wherein you are introduced to the protagonist who visits her extended family. A chain of events do unleash the blood thirsty demons. I must admit that the start of the film was quite wobbly and far too convenient for my liking. Firstly, it did take some time to get to the actual conflict and it did seem like a start-stop kind of a drama to begin with, which did threaten to explode but it didn’t quite.

The complete scenario turns on its head after the first 20 odd minutes. The writers do find their groove and how! The tension that is built up in multiple scenes does make for a compelling watch. There is ample amounts of gore and blood which would make any horror cinephile undergo an orgasm. The events might again not be quite novel but the manner in which they unfold, do make them creepy and quite exciting. The survival drama doesn’t offer any respite and is always on the lookout for raising the stakes as all members of the family are impacted in some way or the other, along with the neighbours of the apartment. This kind of a no-nonsense horror film would always be a winner and Evil Dead Rise is no different.

The writing does try and explore the horror genre by trying to combine a few sub-genres. So the supernatural sub-genre is amalgamated with a zombie and body slasher sub-genre that does make for such an exciting watch. The final act too involving a shotgun and a chainsaw seems to be slightly cliched and straight out of the 1970s slasher films. Yet, it is executed so well that you just don’t seem to mind it. It is an entertaining a soul-satisfying finale act that also does well in linking the end with the opening sequence. Overall, the screenplay starts off slowly but ends up being a ripper, literally so!

Dialogues, Music & Direction

The dialogues are adequate but who really cares about them when the atmospherics of the horror film are on point. The BGM does create a gloomy environment that contributes well to the atmosphere that the film has to offer. The cinematography and the art design are terrific and they combine to give a claustrophobic feel to the drama. The VFX featuring buckets of blood and the make-up on the characters is exquisite and a huge green tick in the report card. Director Lee Cronin does a swell job after the initial wobble and provides no respite to the viewers. This was a terrific comeback in a drama that wasn’t novel to begin with. The direction is really good here.

Performances

The performances are really good here. Mia Challis as Jessica and Jayden Daniels as Gabriel have their moments to shine. Gabrielle Echols as Bridget, Nell Fisher as Kassie and Morgan Davies as Danny are first rate. Alyssa Sutherland as Ellie is frightening and almost terrifying with her get-up. That smile of hers can be a potential cause of your nightmare, in what was a phenomenal performance. Lily Sulivan as Beth is excellent and has a great screen presence that makes you root for her character right throughout.

Conclusion

Evil Dead Rise is gory horror flick after an eternity that makes for a splendid watch. Available in a theatre near you.
