SCAM 1992

RATING
5 Star popcorn reviewss

And here it is! Finally I have finished watching the series Scam 1992 on Sony Liv. This series took some time to finish as it comprised of 10 episodes of 50 to 60 mins each. So I had been eagerly awaiting for this web series right after watching its trailer which was dope! And I had massive expectations from it, does it live up to it, stay tuned!

Based on a book called The Scam by Debashis Basu and Sucheta Dalal, Scam 1992 is the Harshad Mehta Story from the early 90s wherein he was involved in multiple scams worth a truckload of money. This web series gives a detailed look into his life, labelling each event tactfully and presenting a complete picture. The screenplay is just perfectly written, I couldn’t find a single fault with it. The best part of it is that it provides a very balanced look at the events that transpired without blindly vilifying the individual or providing a propoganda based viewing by being biased towards one side of the story. It is real and based on facts and when you watch it, you will know that a huge amount of research may have gone into it(even though it is based on a book). Also, the narrative is bold, no names of the politically powerful connections are spared or changed here which was refreshing to see. Also, if you argue that the series is long, then I wouldn’t agree to that. Also, there are many jargons of the stock market thrown in the narrative but they are so well simplified and explained that someone like me who has no idea about them also has understood them well. Generally it is seen that things drag, but here not even for a single minute did I feel that it is boring and that the writers should get on with it. Just pitch perfect writing! To add to it, each dialogue here is clap worthy and dare I say it, if this was released in a theatre(just hypothetically), then each dialogue would have been met with whistles too! The music is excellent but that BGM🔥🔥! That BGM will have a separate fan base in times to come. Usually, I skip the opening credits but here with that outstanding BGM by Achint Thakkar I did not skip it even once in all of the 10 episodes. Also, I have set it as my ringtone, it is the best BGM score probably after Kabir Singh! Director Hansal Mehta, the veteran of films like Aligarh and Shahid is once again in excellent form. This direction is of the highest order and he deserves distinction marks!

The performances are outstanding and it is Mukesh Chhabra, the casting director that deserves a shoutout. Sharib Hashmi as Sharad Bellary just won me over from the first scene itself. His gait, his expressions just were on point. KK Raina as Pherwani just shows truely how great an actor he is. Rajat Kapoor as K Madhavan is wonderfully restrained coupled with passive aggression. Lalit Parimoo as Das is pretty good. Nikhil Dwivedi aa Tyagi is excellent and it is so good to see him back onscreen after a while. Shadab Khan as the cocky Ajay Kedia is perfectly cast. Satish Kaushik as Manu has his moments to shine, so does Kavin Dave. Jaimini Pathak as Sitharaman, what natural acting. Anjali Barot as Jyoti has such a pretty smile and she wins you over in every scene. Brinda Trivedi as Ashwin’s wife also scores. Ananth Mahadevan as the RBI Governor is superb. Jay Upadhyay as Pranav nails some of his one liners. Chirag Vohra as Bhushan in probably the meatiest role of his career yet, excels and how! Hemant Kher as Ashwin plays perfect foil to Harshad and he is the find of the series for me! Shreya Dhanwantary as Sucheta Dalal is outstanding and I really wish to watch more of Shreya in times to come. She is a phenomenal actress(next stop Family Man 2 maybe?). And there is Pratik Gandhi who is probably one of the finest actors doing the rounds today. As Harshad Mehta he oozes of swag in each of his clap-worthy dialogues yet shows his vulnerable side with priceless expressions towards the end. What acting!

Bollywood would be coming out with its own rendition titled “The Big Bull” starring Abhishek Bachchan. While I am eager to witness the magic of Jr. Bachchan, it may not come close to this gem of a web series. It is a crime to miss this! Scam 1992 is the best series of the year….any year! Available on Sony Liv and Highly Highly Highly Recommended!
