One of the movies which evoked in me laughter, pain and romance is the 1953 movie Roman Holiday, directed and produced and directed by William Wyler. I saw it years back with my mother and wow was I blown away!!
It is a black and white movie which released on 27th August 1953 i.e. when most of us were not even born. At that time also it did a business of $ 12 million!!
Its the story of a princess on a visit to Rome, who is bored of her royal duties and escapes from the embassy inspite of being sedated. In her drugged state she falls asleep on a bench. She is found by Joe Bradley, an American reporter who, not recognizing her, thinking she is intoxicated, lets her spend the night in his apartment . The next morning he realizes who she is and the reporter in him wants to take secret photographs of her. From here the movie is partly a laugh riot, partly poignant and romantic that will leave you with a smile on your face but the ending will tear at your heart strings, leaving you drained.
The princess is ably played by Audrey Hepburn, This was her first major American movie which won her several accolades including the Academy Award, the Golden Globe Award for best actress. She looks so lovely and innocent that you will definitely fall in love with her. Her smile is infectious. The Gregory Peck plays the reporter with his usual suave self. The rest of the ensemble cast consisting of Eddie Albert, Hartley Power, Harcourt Williams and many more give able support to the comedy drama which enfolds in front of your eyes.
Roman Holiday is a refreshing situational comedy. So if you are the one who enjoys a pure rom-com, this movie is for you. Go and enjoy !!!
