Yes, it is a Thursday but I am back with a super early bird review. This is a mega weekend with as many as Five new releases, so just a small request, do shower your love to Popcorn Movie Reviews and me(instagram : @farhad_dalal). Like, comment and share as much as you can, for you will keep getting these early bird reviews in an entertaining manner. Ok, back to the review. I have just finished watching the Vidyut Jammwal-Amit Sadh starrer, Yaara. Does it nicely setup the friendship day weekend, lets find out. 

An official adaptation of the 2011 French Film Les Lyonnais, Yaara is the story of 4 friends part of the Chaukdi Gang who were petty thieves and smugglers, meet after several years after they are released from prison. What happens next? Now, I have tried to explain the story in a single line but clearly I have had a hard time doing it and so it is clear that the story is quite layered. The screenplay is fast paced and good but not without its share of flaws. While a few sequences are tense and nicely choreographed, it is the absence of a main antagonist that is missing in this gangster flick. Also, the end has not much buildup which is surprising because the big reveal(actually a couple) isn’t bad at all. And so the tension is somewhere missing. But there is alot to admire in its screenplay too, some genuine funny moments and badass action sequences that make up for the flaws. The dialogues are pretty good. A serious downer is the patchy editing which takes away the thrill from the drama. Music is strictly average. Director Tigmanshu Dhulia has done a good job though he hasn’t quite nailed it and in no ways is this his best work.

The performances range from average to good. Sanjay Mishra is his usual ‘best’ self in a cameo. Shruti Hassan is impressive as Sukanya. Ankur Vikal as Fakeera is flat to say the least. Shreya Narayan has some good screen presence as Tanu. Kenny Basumatary as Bahadur is good. Vijay Varma as Rizwan is pretty good. Amit Sadh as Mitwa is outstanding and it is his character that holds the proceedings together. Vidyut Jammwal as Phagun is amazing and it is such a pleasure watching him in a role that requires him to act along with his usual action stunts that are outstanding too.

Despite its flaws and an underwhelming end, Yaara is a good one-time watch that is sure to entertain you and can be enjoyed with your group of friends over a nice get-together. But, in times of the pandemic, watch this individually and connect virtually with your buddies. Available on Zee5!
