2024 has been a mixed bag for me, even with two projects releasing - Abhishekh Khan

– By Farhad Dalal

With the success of his series ‘Doctors‘, Abhishekh Khan is riding on a high. In an Exclusive Interview with Farhad Dalal from  Popcorn Reviewss, he talks about his series Doctors and his character Dr. Ridhun.

2 Releases in 2024, 2 very different characters, How has the year 2024 been for you?

2024 has been a mixed bag for me, even with two projects releasing. Both were filmed long ago—Lootere in 2021 and Doctors in 2022. Creatively, I’m still not fully satisfied, but I’m glad they finally came out.

What was your brief and source of preparation for your character of Dr. Ridhun in Doctors?

I watched Rocco and His Brothers before starting the show—it was on my list, and I think it really helped me shape Ridhun’s broodiness. My personal experiences also played a role, particularly in capturing some of his antics. Being from the city myself added a lot of authenticity to the portrayal.

How has your journey been as an actor? Also, how did acting come to you?

Acting is all I know, and I believe I’ve survived because of this art form. My childhood revolved around films—I watched countless movies, sometimes even stealing money just to experience cinema.
Then, in 2017, MAMI opened up an entirely new world of cinema for me. It completely changed my perspective on art, cinema, and acting.
As for my journey, I feel like it’s only just begun. There’s still so much more I have yet to do.

Do you remember your first day on the film set in your debut project? What was it like it?

My journey began with Bard of Blood, so I found myself on a web show set before ever stepping onto a film set. I still vividly remember the day, the scene, and even the temperature.
It was October 15, 2018—the temperature was 5°C—and the scene was Nusrat’s introduction. I’ll never forget the route to the location, the number of cameras, and the sheer number of junior cast members.
Something came over me during that scene, and I improvised a moment. To my amazement, Ribhu sir, my director, allowed me to incorporate it. It was such a lovely day, and looking back, I feel like such a wide-eyed, eager child. What an unforgettable start!

What insecurities have you faced as an actor, and how do you keep yourself motivated when things don't go your way?

Insecurities? I believe every human has them, so I don’t blame myself or feel out of place because of mine. Now, I embrace them with love and kindness.
I’ve heard plenty—comments about my looks, my appearance, even my voice—but that’s okay. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
What keeps me going? Acting. I love it more than anything, and I always will. Things have never shaped up exactly the way I wanted & I’m glad it didn’t, but here I am, doing what I love.

What is your process of preparing for your characters? Do you prefer to be a method actor or are you a spontaneous one?

I have my own ways of preparing for a role, but there’s a fine balance—I make sure to take every note from my director and writers with precision.
Method acting enhances spontaneity; the two are deeply connected. You can’t truly improvise unless you understand your character inside out.
Music plays a big role in my preparation. I also rewatch specific films and scenes repeatedly, searching for something completely different from who I am.
I always make sure to change my appearance, and once I discover how a character walks, everything else starts falling into place—slowly but surely.

Would you be keen to expand your horizon and branch out into other technical departments apart from acting?

Insha’allah someday! Writing & directing will happen.

Recommend your viewers that one film/show (other than your own work) from the year 2024 (any language) that is a Must Watch along with the reasons for the same.

A Different Man, starring Sebastian Stan, is a film that stands out to me. The writing is exceptional, the performances are powerful, and the film itself feels incredibly relevant and meta.

What does the year 2025 have in store for you and your wellwishers?

I don’t have many well-wishers, but for the few who are there, I hope to surprise them. Something is on its way.
