Introduction

It is Monday and it has been a crazy time at the movies given that I am trying to balance out the MAMI releases along with regular theatrical releases. With so many films to cover and write on, I have lost my marbles but I am loving every bit of it. Last night after watching Agra at MAMI, I did have an empty slot for myself, and that is when I decided to venture into the cinemas again and watch the new Hindi film 12th Fail which was the regular theatrical release this Friday. The film is directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra who is a genre filmmaker in many ways, having carved out a niche for himself with films like Khamosh, Parinda and Mission Kashmir. Yet, it was the subject of 12th Fail that did compel me to take a trip to the cinemas.

It was back in 2021 when TVF had come up with an endearing show in the form of Aspirants which did highlight the plight of the students appearing for their civil services exam that has the lowest success in the country. The trailer of 12th Fail did give me a similar kind of warmth thereby promising another heartwarming watch. But more importantly, the story of 12th Fail was based on an incredible true story of an IPS officer who had previous failed in his 12th standard, only to later go on to pass the civil services. Also, I was curious to watch Vikrant Massey and his ability to shoulder a film given that he has had a theatrical release after a very long time. So then does the film 12th Fail manage to impress, let’s find out.

Story & Screenplay

Based on an incredibly true story, 12th Fail follows the story of a protagonist who decides to prepare for the civil services exam after having previously failed in his 12th standard exams. Will he make it to the final cut? The story here is heartfelt and just so inspiring while consistently being laced with the right kinds of emotions that absolutely hit home! The screenplay standing at about a 140 odd minutes does pass off like a breeze while presenting the story with a touch of humour and a lot of conviction. Yes, parts of the story might seem a littke far-fetched on paper, but the beauty lies in the ability of the makers to lace it with such emotions that gently pierce your heart and make for a compelling watch.

The setting plays an important role early on in the film. The dusty landscape of Chambal, a place known for decoity, is home to the protagonist and his family who belong to a humble background. His father, the only working member of the family, does set his precedence of honesty, but this very precedence has resulted in him being fired from his job. And while the protagonist is still studying, cheating is normalized even by his school teachers(represented in a hilarious sequence wherein the whole class flunks after their teacher is arrested for aiding the same). There are grassroot issues related to the politics of the land with the only glimmer of hope being a DSP, whom the protagonist dreams of modelling his life on. But the path ahead isn’t easy especially after he decides to pursue civil services after having lost all his money in a whole new city that has its own share of challenges.

The writers throw in the standard challenges that a UPSC aspirant might encounter while adding a layer of poverty with respect to the protagonist. And they pace the proceedings with such pure emotions that you as a viewer would tend to look past the minor cliches. The fun begins when the protagonist begins his preparation while having to manage his expenses and his budding love life, all at the same time. The beauty of the drama is that the characters are presented with a layer of sincerity that almost invite you into their world. The subtle conflicts between the characters also have a sense of innocence to them that adds the required warmth to the proceedings.

You will find some uncanny similarities with the show Aspirants too but the treatment here is different which had a lot to do with the medium as well(this is a film as compared to Aspirants which is a show). The protagonist has such endearing qualities associated with him, always smiling through his difficulties and tragedies that you silently root for him to do well in the film. I remember the interval block where a confident looking protagonist exits the exam center only to later realise that he has written an essay on a totally different topic. And that made my heart sink as well, that was the impact of the drama.

Yet, the drama is inspiring in many ways given that you witness the day to day challenges of the protagonist. And you are also invested in his grit and determination while being privy to such tender moments as he restarts and raises his game towards the UPSC mains and the eventual interview. The amount of tension created in the final act is substantial enough for you to enter the jittery space with the protagonist and the final 20 minutes just hit home with the emotions despite being a little too convenient for my liking(particularly with the questions asked). But that was the limitation of the medium, but taking nothing away from the journey which was beautiful. Overall, the screenplay might be predictable but it ticks all the right boxes with the kind of emotions on display.

Dialogues, Music & Direction

The dialogues are filled with gems to be discovered throughout the narrative. Lines like ‘Jo Actor Gutka Bechte Hain, Woh Kya Khud Bhi Khaate Hain?’ just hit home, and beautifully so. The USP of the lines lies in their simplicity and the ability of the writers to not overdo things. The music is melodious and goes perfectly with the gentle vibe of the drama. The BGM is quite sweet and I did like the one theme in particular that was played out right throughout the narrative. The cinematography is good and it captures the vibe of the drama really well. The editing is quite sharp for most parts of the film. Director Vidhu Vinod Chopra does a stupendous job here. His ability to create moments filled with the right kinds of emotions was absolutely wonderful to watch. The direction is excellent here.

Performances

The performances are simply wonderful by the ensemble cast. I just wish the voiceover wasn’t added in the drama. Radhika who essays the role of the owner of a training institute, adds bouts of humour to her performance in a good job done. Rahul Dev Shetty is intimidating as the interviewer and his presence was enough to make anyone shiver. Geeta Agrawal as the mother of the protagonist is sincere and endearing. Harish Khanna as the father of the protagonist has a certain emotional streak that is so well integrated in his character and expertly performed by him. Priyanshu Chatterjee as the DSP is firm but filled with warmth and sincerity. Sanjay Bishnoi as Naval and Perry Chhabra as Rajini have his moments to shine. Sam Mohan aa Deep is assertive and incredible to watch despite a limited screen time.

Anshumaan Pushkar as Gauri Bhaiya is a character similar to Sandeep Bhaiya from Aspirants, and every time he appears onscreen, he will fill you up with a lot of warmth and inspiration with his talks. Anant Joshi as Pandey expresses his vulnerabilities beautifully while maintaining a balancing act with respect to his friendship with the protagonist. Medha Shankar as Shraddha is quietly charming and she expresses her emotions beautifully. And she has a towering screen presence that makes it hard for you to ignore her every time she appears onscreen. Vikrant Massey as Manoj is the heart of the film. And quite honestly, he has always been a good actor but marred by choices which weren’t the best. But here he scores with a delightful character that will instantly put a smile on your face while oozing with grit and determination. Vikrant was quite affable but more importantly, emoted beautifully and his performance gently tugged the strings of my heart while making me shed a tear or two for him in joy!

Conclusion

12th Fail is an inspiring little tale of grit and determination laced with sincerity and boasting of some commendable performances that makes for a wonderful watch. Available in a theatre near you and Highly Recommended!
