The Mindy Project
As usual I was looking for a series which does not only have one or two seasons but kind of like a Sitcom series. Browsing my way through multiple OTT platforms, I found this series called The Mindy project. As I saw Mindy Kaling is one of the writers, I was sure this series will be comedy and light hearted. Let’s see how it goes!!
This series is a story of protagonist Mindy Lahari, an OBGYN. An American girl with Indian roots making her way to the top professional and trying to find her happily ever after. Dr. Lahiri gets a job at as OBGYN at New York’s Shulman & Associates by accident. Initially Mindy has a hard time trying to adjust at this new place with all white people and especially with Dr. Danny Castellano. Yet, she being a person who never gives up, she was determined to be the best of herself and start her career. Mindy knows she is not the perfect girl to dream about a perfect boyfriend and she accepts herself the way she is, but she does imagine herself having a handsome husband and beautiful babies as like any other girl. She does make some really bad relationship decisions.
Mindy and her co-workers are one family standing besides each together through thick and thin. Mindy marries some guy, have baby with another guy, gets engaged to some else and actually loves someone else.. Sounds like a complicated love life, isn’t it? With all this complications, Mindy grew in her professional career and opened her own fertility clinic in the same building of her practice. As the name suggests, this series is based on building a best version of Mindy. One of the highlights for me in this series was seeing India in a couple of episodes.
Direction & Screenplay
The script is good and story picks up well from the first episode itself. Mindy Kaling and her comic timings are just amazing. I was really happy to see a couple of guest appearances from The Office series costars as well. The chemistry between characters really lifted the show up. Not to forget, dialogues are just perfect for such a quirky comic series like this. A couple of times though I had to push myself to watch the next episode. And when I did that I was glad to laugh again.
Performances
Hats off to Mindy Kaling and her acting. Some might find her average but I truly admire. She has great potential as an actor, writer, director as well as producer. Chris Messina as Dr. Danny Castillano has such a beautiful chemistry with Mindy. Ed Weeks as Dr. Jeremy Reed is the most handsome doctor to die for. Ike Barinholtz as Morgan is so engrossed in his character with the best comedy scenes and truly loved to see him on screen. Xosha Roquemore as Tamra Webb-registered nurse, Adam Pally as Dr. Peter Prentice has less screen presence comparatively but has been a great supporting friend for Mindy throughout. Garret Dillahunt as Dr. Jody is one of my favourite characters in the entire series.
Conclusion
The Mindy project is a light hearted comedy series to make you laugh and just relax while watching the characters have fun on screen.
