Introduction

What the f*** did I just watch?? A few days back I had watched the trailer of a brand new webseries Ok Computer which would eventually air on Hotstar. Anand Gandhi the creative genius behind films like Ship of Theseus and Tummbad was involved here and naturally my excitement for the series was sky high. The trailer seemed drastically different from anything what I have seen before. Finally, I got a chance to watch Ok Computer on Disney plus Hotstar, is it worth your time, stay tuned.

Story & Screenplay

Set in the future, Ok Computer is a sci-fi comedy whodunnit of a murder that has happened. The story is unlike anything I have watched ever. Since it is futuristic there are robots and technology in play here and the science student in me had a field day watching it. I remember having opted for robotics during my engineering days and some of the concepts are still fresh in my mind and a few of them were put to use here too. The screenplay is quirky and probably the wackiest piece of art you will ever see. The first two episodes are exceptional. Come the third episode, the pace drops and in some places(towards the end) the drama seems dragged. But the screenplay is bloody brilliant. If you are a science student then you will absolutely love it. If you aren’t then you may find the drama boring as the writers keep the scale high and rarely explain concepts during the narration. Also, there are moments of brilliance wherein there is a social commentary which you might draw parallels to the current day world too. The writing is smart and genuinely something totally different and crazy.

Dialogues, Music & Direction

The dialogues are as quirky and crazy as the script that generates a lot of dark humour, again not meant for everyone. The BGM is outstanding and does its bit to transport you to the world of technology. The director’s chair is shared by Neil Pagedar and Pooja Shetty and their direction is pretty good. Just the concept was excellent with decent execution too. But at times there was little overindulgence too which could have been avoided.

Performances

The performances are excellent here. Jackie Shroff and Rasika Duggal are outstanding in their cameos particularly the latter. Ratnabali Bhattacharya as Trisha is good. Sarand Sathaye as Ashfaq does manage to tickle your funny bone more than once. Kani Kusruti as Monalisa is hilarious right from the first episode, oh boy what a find she is! Outstanding is an understatement. Radhika Apte as Laxmi is pretty good. I read a few reviews where she was accused of the same kind of acting. I feel that is a weak criticism for an actor who has always tried to do something different. Vijay Varma as Saajan(notice the name in a futuristic film which itself is hilarious) has also done a fine job. Basically, the concept was a winner everything else was a bonus.

Conclusion

I have read reviews where many people have found this series drab and boring. What my take is, yes there were scenes that were long and in places dragged but the makers have to be applauded for an excellent and crazy concept. This sort of cinema needs to be encouraged else you will keep getting served formula content. I am sticking my neck out and giving this an extra one star(to my overall rating). Ok Computer is a crazy webseries with an even crazier concept that is quirky, wacky and outstanding to watch. Available on Disney plus Hotstar and Highly Recommended.
