Undekhi Character Analysis

Undekhi Character Analysis

SonyLiv’s crime thriller web television series Undekhi 1 and 2 are ruling the hearts. To put it simply, some actors have done well in both the seasons of Ashish R Shukla’s web series which revolves around a power-drunk influential family. Undekhi 1 was released on July 10, 2020, and the second season on March 4, 2022.

The actors, Surya Sharma (Rinku), Anchal Singh (Teji Grewal), Harsh Chhaya (Mr Atwal/Papaji), Dibyendu Bhattacharya (DSP Barun Ghosh) to name a few, excel in their respective roles. Not only for the great acting skills of these actors, but the episodes of both seasons have been a treat for the eyes. Surya Sharma is the show-stealer.

Music, background score, location, sets and other elements of mise-en-scene have been A-class. Using curse words and abusive language speaks volumes about how corrupt and powerful families spend days and nights. Some of the family members (Atwal family) try their level best to hide the murder committed by the head of the family, Mr Atwal. Others do not want to bow down before the wrongdoers (Mr Atwal and his supporters and partners-in-crime). However, goodness prevails in the end.

Surya Sharma as Rajender Singh Atwal/Rinku Paaji
Surya Sharma has announced his arrival with a bang. His portrayal of Rajender Singh Atwal/Rinku Paaji has been very well-loved and appreciated by all. In fact, it is he who, despite being an out-and-out villain, has garnered votes (win hearts). Rinku is hard-hearted and unmerciful. But he is also a dutiful son, a lover and, above all, a good friend-cum-brother. He never lets his father (non-biological) down. His first scene speaks volumes about his sheer power and command over others. He abuses people, screws people, and cheats them. All Surya Sharma does in Undekhi 1 and 2 is to command others and particularly obey his father. His screen presence and villainous persona have been able to make a mark on the viewers. Congratulations and well-wishes are pouring in for Surya Sharma for his tremendous acting. I do not think anyone other than Surya Sharma could have done justice to the role (Rinku Paaji).
Dibyendu Bhattacharya DSP Barun Ghosh Undekhi
Dibyendu Bhattacharya as DSP Barun Ghosh
Dibyendu Bhattacharya as DSP Ghosh is calm and composed. He never loses his cool. Even bad and pathetic situations cannot make him give up. The way he deals with the mighty and all-powerful Atwal family is commendable. He does his homework and research well. Instead of making his scenes too dramatic, he coolly deals with each crime scene. He does not bow down before anyone. We need more such characterisations.
Anchal Singh as Teji Grewal
Anchal Singh as Teji Grewal

Anchal Singh, as Teji Grewal, has taken everyone by surprise. She is beautiful and supremely talented. Her screen presence feels fresh. She essays the role of Mrs. Daman Atwal who instead of bowing down, challenges the Atwal family’s way of living and thinking. Her courage makes it easy for her to safe carry away (save) one dancer (an injured Apeksha Porwal as Koyal) in an ambulance by fooling Rinku (it serves as a twist for the first episode of Undekhi 2).

Indeed, a master plan from DSP Ghosh. The power (political, social and economic) of her husband’s family fails to dent her determination in saving the girl. She teams up with her husband, Daman Atwal (Ankur Rathee), and fights against Rinku and her corrupt father-in-law (Mr Atwal, played by Harsh Chhaya).

Harsh Chhaya as Mr Atwal
Harsh Chhaya as Papaji/Mr Atwal
Harsh Chhaya is a seasoned actor, and he delivers a stunning performance. He drinks, drinks and drinks. He scolds, abuses and ends up killing one dancer in the very first few episodes. He is shameless and does not even bother to think about others except Rinku Paaji. Harsh is definitely harsh in all the episodes. His accent, body language and attires appear realistic.

The other actors also excel in Undekhi. Ayn Zoya, Apeksha Porwal, Vaarun Bhagat, Sayandeep Sengupta, Meenakshi Sethi and Raynu Verma have been excellent. However, it is Surya Sharma (merciless Rinku Paaji) who steals the show with his stellar performance. Undekhi 2 also features the veteran actor Tej Sapru.
