Top Picks of September 2023

Coming to the end of September, it was a not only a great month with very big releases but some small releases surprising the audience.

The story has all the emotions in check wherein you find yourself unassumingly rooting for the couple while connecting with their journeys and the situations that they find themselves in. In other words, it is the most heartfelt love story that I have witnessed all year! The screenplay standing at about 140 odd minutes does make for a supremely compelling and painfully aching watch that will make for heart sear with pain. And just to put it out there, this film is divided into two parts – Side A which is out now, and Side B which is scheduled to release on 20th October!.. Read More…

El Conde follows the story of Augusto Pinochet reimagined as a 250-year-old vampire who finally wishes to retire. But the vultures around him won’t let him go without a final bite of the ‘cherry’. The story here is an indulgent black comedy with dollops of satire and elements of horror that do account for a unique watch. Besides, the subject itself is a ‘punch-up’ narrative in a story that mixes historical events with fiction… Read More…

Yes, the plot is niche and requires focus, particularly with its non-linear narrative that jumps timelines. But if you are willing to sit through it then there are rewards to be had… Read More…

The fourth and final season of Hostel Daze follows the story of the beloved gang who find themselves in the final year of engineering, in what is a classic phase of transition in life where the big bad world awaits them. Will they form memories, one last time? The story here is high on nostalgia and relatability, with a conscious effort made to make a tonal shift in the series one final time!.. Read More…

An official adaptation of a short story of the same name by Roald Dahl, The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar follows the story of a rich man who learns about a guru who can see without his eyes, only to set off to learn the skills in order to cheat in gambling. The story here is refreshingly different and perfectly symbolizes A Wes Anderson world wherein he could run riot… Read More…

Based on true events, Kannur Squad follows the story of members of the Kerala Police who investigate the murder of an influential person by chasing the culprits across the country. The premise of the story isn’t novel even to the Malayalam Film Industry which had previously produced Kuttavum Shikshayum that had a similar premise which was also previously made in Tamil titled ‘Theeran’… Read More…
