Sanju
I was in school where I was participating in a cultural programme of my society. I was definitely thrilled when I heard who the chief guest was. It was none other than Sanjay Dutt. He was my first brush with a celebrity in person. This week releases his biopic, Sanju. Right from the first look to the first teaser and trailer this movie created the right kind of buzz which did reach a crescendo this week. Does the movie live up to the humongous hype….lets find out.
Sanju is the story of Sanjay Dutt(the famous bollywood actor) whose life has been a ‘Saanp Seedi ka khel’. His life story is quite amazing. But it is the screenplay that I was more interested in, as Bollywood often has a fetish of glorifying the person in their Biopics. And well Sanju is an exception. The screenplay by Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi(yes lets name them)is so effortless and consistent. It is the finest screenplay that I have witnessed in a long time. The long run time of 160 mins didn’t feel so long because of the awesome screenplay. The dialogues are on point. The music goes well with the narrative. The very reliable Rajkumar Hirani has never been out of form really as a director, rather he is only getting better. I could blindly walk into a movie directed by him. Awesome direction, distinction marks!!! India needs more directors like him and less like the director of Race 3(you know who)!
The performances are top notch. Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Jim Sarbh, Boman Irani all have their moments. Paresh Rawal as Sunil Dutt is wonderfully restrained. Vicky Kaushal(who is fast becoming my favourite) is in the form of his life. This guy is destined to be the next big thing in Bollywood. He absolutely nails his character. And then there is Sanjay Dutt…no wait Ranbir Kapoor(haha) who is Sanjay Dutt. The walk, the talk, his mannerisms, even Sanjay Dutt could not have played himself better. Watch this movie to see if you can tell the difference. He will surely sweep all the awards this year.
Sanju makes you laugh and also makes you cry. It is a MASTERPIECE, no two ways about it. It is the best movie that I have watched this year so far and the best movie coming out of Bollywood in the last two to three years. A real criminal offence to miss this one. Lets put it this way, Eid has arrived two weeks late in Bollywood!!
PS : Watch this movie even if you aren’t a fan of Ranbir Kapoor or Sanjay Dutt!! An excellent cinematic experience!!
