Introduction

Moving on to the final new release of the weekend and I have just finished watching Raat Baaki Hai on Zee5. This movie was slated to release on Zee5 last year but due to undisclosed reasons, Zee5 decided to push it back. Well this weekend it is finally here, is it worth your time, lets find out.

Story & Screenplay

Raat Baaki Hai is the story of events unfolding one might where a murder takes place. Who has committed it? Adapted from a play, the story is definitely interesting with a good premise. But the writers had a tall task to transform the stage story to a screen story. And here is where they fell short drastically. The screenplay is slow to begin with. It takes it time to setup the world around in the first hour. As it was a good buildup but come the second hour, things were very predictable. You will be able to easily guess who the killer is if you have watched dozens of such movies. Also a big flaw was that the narration did not follow the investigation done by the investigating officer. Instead, a needless flashback comprised major portions of the second hour. This is a cardinal sin in a whodunnit. Remember the Manoj Bajpayee starrer Silence and how he worked his way to the end to unmask the real killer? That indeed was thrilling and a perfect template for a whodunnit. Here, the screenplay should have been adapted better, perhaps the stage drama would have been better with this screenplay, the onscreen drama falls flat.

Dialogues, Music & Direction

The dialogues are fairly well written. The BGM is good and adds well to the atmosphere, music is alright. Director Avinash Das misses the mark with his execution here. A better narration would have ensured that the audience would have played the guessing game, sadly here the cards are on the table for everyone to see.

Performances

The performances are top notch here. Rahul Dev as Ahlawat is excellent in an underwritten role. Dipannita Sharma as Vani looks pretty and does a fine job. Saurabh Sachdeva as Rehan and Saneer Malhotra as Sujan Singh lend good support. Anup Soni as Karthik is pretty good. Paoli Dam as Vasukhi is absolutely brilliant, the way she mouths her dialogues, to her gestures, it was acting of the highest order.

Conclusion

Raat Baaki Hai comprises of some good performances that go in vain due to its lacklustre execution. Available on Zee5.
