Overview

Qismat in the first Punjabi film that I watched and I am so glad I started with this romantic drama film which has all the ingredients to make it wholesome entertainer. It has Sargun Mehta and Ammy Virk in leads while the story is penned down by Jagdeep Sidhuji who also dons the Director hat for this one. This movie is one of the highest grossing Punjabi films of all time and very well received globally.

Synopsis

The Story revolves around Shivjit ( Ammy Virk) and Bani ( Sargun Mehta). Shivjit lives in a small village of Punjab. He is carefree and irresponsible and never takes anything seriously in life. Due to which he has already failed in his exams twice. He convinces his parents to let him go to Chandigarh to obtain his Bachelor’s Degree as he is bored of his life in the village.

Once in Chandigarh he tries hitting on various girls to have casual relationships. There he meets Bani (Sargun Mehta) who resides in the same building as his. He immediately befriends her though she makes it very clear to him that she is already dating someone.

Bani’s boyfriend cheats on her which makes her miserable and she promises herself to never fall in love again and tells her father to arrange her marriage, as she no longer trust herself for finding the right guy. The plot thickens when Shivjit realizes that he is not meant for casual dating and that he loves Bani.

Bani does not reciprocate the love and makes it clear that she can only consider dating him if her dad approves. Due to Shivjit’s irresponsible and ignorant nature Gurnam Singh (Bani’s father) refuses Shivjit’s plea and proposal.

Heartbroken and devastated he returns to his village and agrees to marry a girl chosen by his family. Until one fine day he finds Gurnam Singh at his door begging him. Why is Gurnam Singh begging now and does Shivjit gives in to his plea or is too late for second chances is something you need to find out.

Takeaway

This movie will definitely make you laugh and cry (a lot). It is very rare when you come across films which start of as entertainers but by the end of it will leave you anxious, sad and maybe heartbroken. The twist towards the end is very unexpected which makes this movie different and a winner in the genre. The music is a winner too with Jaani penning down the lyrics and music by B Praak and Sukh E, Ammy Virk has sung most of the songs which are absolute treat to the ears and heart. This movie’s success also solidified the leads Sargun Mehta and Ammy Virk to super stardom and I am super excited for the sequel “Qismat 2” which is set to release on 24th September 2021 with the same team.

Writing/Music/Performances

Full credit to the writer Jagdeep Sidhuji for making us laugh at one moment and bawling in the next minute. Ammy Virk and Sargun Mehta have time and again proven their mettle and this movie brings out their best. It is an ensemble cast with Guggu Gill and Satwant kaur giving emotional and solid performances. Apart from performances the background score and the songs of the films are also the USP of the film. The music of this film will stay with you for a very long time.
