Introduction

Onto the final release of the weekend and I finished watching the new Telugu film Pareshan which is now streaming on SonyLiv. The weekend which is past me was quiet and it gave me ample of breathing space while also allowing me time to search for new content. But this week is busy building up to the grand Independence day weekend wherein I shall have to work overtime to get past a plethora of new releases. So that was my life update and now back to the review!

This year has been a mixed bag for most of the industries from South be it Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada or the Telugu film industry. While there has been a lower acceptance of the big budget entertainers, it is the smaller films which have come to the party in each of the four film industries. As far as the Telugu Film Industry is concerned, one of my favourite films from the industry has been Balagam, a simplistic story that really touches your heart. And I was looking forward to Pareshan with the same vibe, wherein it almost felt like a feel-good Malayalam drama packaged in a Telugu film. So then does Pareshan manage to impress, lets find out.

Story & Screenplay

Pareshan follows the story of a youth from a vibrant village who loses the money that he needs to pay to his father’s friend. Will monetary problems continuing to stack up, does he manage to arrange the funds? The story here is simplistic and rooted with a feel-good vibe that does put a smile on your face in parts. But on the downside, the plot here was slender and spread too thin in the second hour. It is in this aspect that that the Malayalam film industry does triumph despite having slender plotlines to deal with. The screenplays are eventful and make for an enjoyable watch. Here though, the screenplay standing at over 2 hours did seem atleast 20 minutes long wherein the plot started to go around in circles in the second hour. Having said that, it is still enjoyable in parts.

The drama does begin by introducing the principal characters while presenting a goofy little vibe of the area wherein the events of the film are set in. The writing instantly branches into multiple events that supposedly take place at the same point of time involving different characters. This series perhaps could have been shot differently, for instance presenting 4 boxes on the screen and sequentially panning in each box. I say this because, the events were stray but designed to give a proper character design to each character. And the events were funny too but a little too convoluted for my liking.

The proceedings are light and frothy and the writing never really takes itself seriously(in a good way). What that ensures is that the humour in the screenplay is nicely tapped into across multiple events of the film. The conflicts are easy on the eye and make for an enjoyable watch. I quite liked the buildup in the drama that allowed me to settle myself in the film before the turn of events at the halfway mark. This setup things nicely for the second hour which is also enjoyable in parts but does get repetitive.

The issue begins in the second hour wherein the events of the film just go around in circles and thereby spread the plot too thin. Make no mistake, the events are watchable and still allow you to hang in there as a viewer, while also providing a few moments of laughter. But if I were to view it objectively, it did make me feel that the writers were running out of ideas while getting to the final act which was also mildly underwhelming although quite funny. But overall, the screenplay does have its moments to shine and it shall put a smile on your face.

Dialogues, Music & Direction

The dialogues are funny and quirky and definitely would make you laugh. The music blends well with the vibe of the drama, the BGM is good as well. The cinematography is wonderful and captures the spirit of the village wonderfully well. The editing is a little patchy and it could have been better. Director Rupak Ronaldson does a good job with the proceedings despite being rough around the edges. He is able to extract humour from the drama which does keep the ship sailing towards the end.

Performances

The performances are pretty good here. Arjun Krishna as Sathi is hilarious and makes his presence felt tremendously well. Bunny Abiran as Pasha is first rate as is Vishwadev. Sai Prasanna as Rajitha is wonderful to watch. Pavani Karanam as Shireesha has her moments to shine in a charming little role. Thiruveer as Isaac is excellent and he does take you on a range of emotions which will put a smile on your face.

Conclusion

Despite its wafer-thin plot, Pareshan is a rooted comedy with great performances that makes for a good one-time watch. Available on SonyLiv.
