Introduction

It is still a Monday but I did have a little leftover from the weekend, and with that I finished watching the new Tamil film Mark Antony which is now streaming on Amazon Prime. There are a few films that you wish to skip but then there are a few films that manage to create a bit of a buzz on social media that you eventually end up keen awaiting the OTT release of the film. And Mark Antony did fall in the latter category. So right from the busy weekend when I had to miss out on its theatrical release, I was keen awaiting its OTT release, and I finally got my chance to watch the film on Amazon Prime. Previously, I had just brushed upon its subject and the idea of a sci-fi integrated in a gangster drama was honestly bonkers wherein the film could have headed either way. But then does the film Mark Antony manage to impress, let’s find out.

Story & Screenplay

Mark Antony follows the story of a mechanic and the son of a former gangster who wishes to know the truth about his father until he stumbles upon a phone through which he could make calls to his past. The story is wacky and absolutely bonkers with its concept which is silly and frivolous but a lot of fun to witness. The screenplay standing at a whopping runtime of about 150 minutes could have been further trimmed for a crisper watch but the event and the proceedings are hilarious and something that will make you keep returning for more.

The drama opens with a hilarious sequence featuring a scientist devoting his entire life to build a telephone through which calls could be made to the past. Once successful, there is a hilarious turn of events wherein he dies but not before the writers lay down the rules with respect to the telephonic device while also touching upon the principal characters in the fray. This sets the tone wonderfully for the rest of the drama to follow. And the best part about the same being the self-aware writing wherein the writers are well aware of the kind of humour being addressed.

The proceedings are hilarious with the world building that takes place around the protagonist who is a mechanic while his friend is a gangster owing to his father who is now a Godfather, and the friend of the protagonist’s father. Confused? Nevermind. The one thing to be kept in mind while watching the film is to completely surrender to the vision of the makers without questioning the logic to fully enjoy the film. The concept of a sci-fi is used only as an undercurrent with the tone of the drama being a frivolous comedy, and the drama needs to be addressed as exactly that, a comedy. The drama is predictable but hilarious with the turn of events particularly in the manner in which the protagonist discovers the telephone and the events that follow post that. While the drama is predictable and the grand reveal of the mystery with respect to the father isn’t shocking, it is the events of the interval block that promise for a hilarious second hour.

There are minor lags in the second hour with certain events getting slightly repetitive but it is the tone of the drama that consistently keeps you invested with its wacky and frivolous comedy. There are a few laugh out loud sequences that had me laughing hysterically while the repercussions of altering the past started taking its toll on the current times. The events leading up to the final act are good but the final act in itself is a little too simplistic and one-dimensional. But a little follow up post that does give a hint of a possible franchise, something which should be exciting. Overall, the screenplay is well written and it doesn’t lose sight of the tonality of the drama wherein it never takes itself seriously.

Dialogues, Music & Direction

The dialogues are silly and frivolous, and the lines compliment the tone of the drama perfectly. The music is alright but atleast two.of the songs break the flow of the drama. The BGM is decent as well. The cinematography is good and captures the wacky vibe of the drama really well. The VFX is good given the limited budget of the film. The editing is good for most parts although a little crisper edit in the second hour would not have hurt. Director Adhik Ravichandran does a fabulous job in never losing the tone of the drama while setting up a seemingly complicated world with ease. He is also able to create several laugh out loud moments which were a treat to watch. The direction is pretty good here.

Performances

The performers here run riot and all of them are a treat to watch. Abhinaya as Vedhavalli and Ritu Varma as Ramya are good but they are hardly there in the drama while being completely wasted given their talent. Selvaraghavan as Chiranjeevi is wonderful in that hilarious opening act and he sets the tone of the drama early on in the film wonderfully well. Sunil Verma as Ekambaram is first rate as well. Redin Kingsley as Maserati is spot on with his comic timing and he does a swell job. Vishal Krishna in the dual roles of Mark and Antony oozes of style but also of innocence and he does a wonderful job here. But it is SJ Suryah who steals the show in his dual roles of Madhan and Jackie. Here was an actor perfectly understanding the tone of the drama and hence subjecting himself to the crazy over the top antics in what was a hilarious performance. He cracked me up on most occasions that he appeared oncreen.

Conclusion

Mark Antony is a mad sci-fi caper that goes bonkers with its humour. It is silly, frivolous but a lot of fun that guarantees an enjoyable and entertaining watch overall! Available on Amazon Prime.
