Introduction

We all have had our share of stories from Goa at some point of time. But as they say, whatever happens in Goa, stays in Goa! It has been more than two decades when I had first watched the brilliant Hindi Film Dil Chahta Hai and since then, I was clouted with thoughts of going to Goa with my buddies. Even though Goa ain’t far from Mumbai, and the journey would roughly take about 12 hours, there ate way many obstacles around the way than you can ever imagine! The first obstacle starts right from the place you stay. It was indeed a task for most of us to convince our parents that Goa is so much more than boozing! I mean, you can booze on a beach for God Sake! Well, finally in our second year of Engineering, we were given a green signal for our Goa trip, that went on to be one of my personal best trips with all the ‘kaand’ that took place there. But whatever happens in Goa stays in Goa!

There was a time when the Hindi Film Industry was literally acing the comedy genre with multi-star casts that would ensure you have a ball while visiting the theatre. When I do look back, these may have been brainless comedies, the likes of Hera Pheri, Dhamaal or even Dhol(amongst the other Priyadarshan films too), but I have a fond memory of watching each one of them in a theatre. But this formula of a pure comedy was soon discarded while combining the genre with other potential genres along the way. This was particularly true after the advent of OTT platforms where the perception was that comedy films won’t work at all in theatres. So when Kunal Kemmu in his directorial debut announced his film Madgaon Express to be a ‘comedy’, I was super excited. Right from its first trailer, the thought of combining the idea of Dil Chahta Hai with say The Hangover, seemed to be a winner of an idea in itself. And I finally ventured into the film Madgaon Express with a lot of hopes, does it manage to tickle your funny bone, let’s find out.

Story & Screenplay

Madgaon Express follows the story of three friends who finally get a chance to visit Goa. But everything that can go wrong does go wrong in this Anti- Dil Chahta Hai of a drama😂! The story here is refreshing even from a premise point of view that has a relatability factor to it(like I had mentioned in the introduction). But what truly works in the brand of comedy here which is somewhere between slapstick and situational! I can’t remember the last time I had laughed this much in a theatre, right from the start to the end. And kudos to the writing for reintroducing this brand of comedy which was long forgotten by the Hindi Film Industry. The screenplay standing at about 144 minutes is sharp with its comedy and consistently does throw one gag after another along its runtime, something that resulted in some delirious hysteria of the highest order. This was probably Dil Chahta Hai on steroids in a drama that went completely bonkers with its writing!

The drama here begins with the younger version of the protagonists in high school. The year is 1998 when the trio plan to visit Goa for the first time. Goa as a state is terribly typecast particularly amongst youngsters who believe it to be a destination for ‘beaches, bikinis, babes and babes with bikinis on beaches😂'(which isn’t entirely true but who is going to tell ‘them’). But firstly, they needed to cross the first hurdle of convincing their parents, a mission that was unsuccessful and aborted there and then! Cut to 2003, and two years since Dil Chahta was out when our now ‘somewhat’ grownup protagonists decide to visit Goa in an impromptu plan. Once again, after 30 odd injuries later(when they barely made it across the road), the plan is aborted. And I liked how the writers here brought the concept of ‘life’ in the picture. Yes, people move on, so do friends and you always feel that you are left behind while the world has moved on from you. This little period did exploit this sentiment wonderfully well with an undercurrent of sadness even when the drama on the surface was a comedy! All of this drama did unfold against the backdrop of the onset of the social media era that made for an interesting watch even as the three protagonists, now at different positions of life even financially, reignite their plan of visiting Goa. And they have no idea of the things to follow!

The proceedings are downright hilarious and make for such an enjoyable watch on the big screen. There is a tone tending towards The Hangover with the surface of the drama being in the Dil Chahta Hai mode, a marriage that is honestly made in heaven while their honeymoon is in Goa😂(does that even make any sense). But that is essentially the zany tone of the drama that amounts to comedy in the purest form, and enjoyable in many ways. There isn’t a single dull moment with the writing throwing one punch after the another which will leave you cracking up in your seat. And I also liked the fact that there was a considerable amount of world building with the right kind of characters with their own unique traits thrown in the mix, something which is such a rarity in the Hindi Films(and which was my complaint too for a very long time).

The zany events of the first hour go a notch up even as you are introduced to the new bunch of actors, even as the protagonists find themselves in a pickle, a compulsory ‘kaand’ from your Goa checklist. But more importantly, the drama does not lose its coherence in the chaos that it tries to create(some parts are illogical but what the hell, I chose to have a good time as a bargain), either through the situations or the characters. Yet the comedy just never slows down, almost reaching its pinnacle in that incredible ‘fish warehouse’ sequence that had me laughing and hooting in joy! The events leading to the final act are also good but how I wish the finale had ended with a bang, almost like a final face-off between all characters! The end was a tad underwhelming but taking nothing away from the craziness of the drama which was an absolute ball to witness!

Dialogues, Music & Direction

The dialogues are razor sharp and oozing with a brand of comedy that often had me in splits! The lines were so witty(not Churchgate, ok bye) and absolutely going bonkers with the humour that ensured for a hilarious watch. The music and BGM go well in sync with the tone of the drama and I liked how the songs were integrated in the narrative without stalling the proceedings. The cinematography is excellent particularly in the climax that itself was a contrived space(even as the attempt was that of a Mexican standoff, hilarious😂). The editing is pretty good as well, never really allowing the drama to weigh down at any juncture. Director Kunal Kemmu in his debut outing does an incredible job here with the brand of comedy that almost hits home. Yet in all of the chaos, there is a sense of control of not allowing the drama to spread too thin or even getting out of hand, while consistently maintaining the zany tone of the drama. I guess this was his biggest achievement as a director even though it was slightly rough around the edges in certain scenes(but I shall let that pass). I had a great time, thank you Kunal Kemmu!

Performances

The performances are outstanding by the ensemble cast. I was surprised to see Remo Dsouza acting here but his expression-less character of Doctor Dan actually contributed to the humour of the film. Nora Fatehi as Tasha is well utilized and she does manage to do a decently good job. Chhaya Kadam as Kanchan Kombdi is such a fine actor who impresses yet again. And kudos to the casting director for casting her in a role which was different from the roles that she had performed previously. Her comic timing was on point in a memorable little character. Upendra Limaye as Mendoza is hilarious to the core and I died laughing in his introduction scene. Such a fine actor himself who can easily mould himself in any genre(remember Page 3?), he is brilliant to witness here. And we deserve a spin-off film of Mendoza and Kanchan, boy would that be hilarious!

The boys were an interesting casting as well and it turned out to be a winner in every sense of the word. Each group has a daring guy, a stoic guy and a guy who is the ‘coward’ of the group. And Avinash Tiwary, Divyendu Sharma and ‘aapro Harshad Mehta’ aka Pratik Gandhi are perfect fits here. Avinash as Ayush has a stellar screen presence and showcases his comedy timing in a rather subtle manner. Pratik Gandhi as Pinku is incredibly good in a character with a dual personality – one without drugs and one with the consumption of drugs, and he was hilarious to the absolute core. Divyendu Sharma as Dodo is the life of the group. He manages to find humour in even the most unexpected situations, a virtue that can be attributed to his impeccable sense of humour. He is the life of the group and it was an absolute pleasure to watch him here.

Conclusion

Madgaon Express is almost like Dil Chahta Hai on steroids resulting in bonkers of a drama that makes for such a hilarious watch. Available in a theatre near you and Highly Recommended!

PS : Going with an additional half star due to the biggest mystery of the film, who the hell was Mariam?? Her character reminded me of Ms Sara Bellum who was the Mayor’s secretary in The Powerpuff Girls(you will know when you watch the film)! Ahhh, brilliant 😂😂!!
