Guide
When I look back for the classic movies of 1960/70, immediately Guide strikes me. It was a very bold subject of those times, very superbly handled by Goldie (Vijay Anand), the director.
Infidelity, extra marital affair in those times was a big no no even to discuss loudly or to write about. Dev Anand took a bold step to produce the movie choosing the risky subject. A distasteful marriage pushes Rosie to Raju, the Guide, who works hard to fulfill her ambition of becoming a very successful dancer. Power of money corrupts Raju, it is too late when he realises his folly, and to salvage himself, he takes a self searching journey to wilderness.
The story is balanced superbly, audience were in sympathy with the woman in question, and at the end the hero was immortalised. Dev Anand as Raju Guide, Waheeda Rehman as Rosie, were best in their respective roles, and full marks to Vijay Anand, the director. Music by S. D. Burman was good. If you like old classics, it’s a must watch.
