Introduction

It is still a Tuesday and after such a brilliant weekend that is now past me in terms of the new releases, I have some room to start afresh and scout for some fresh content. With that, I finished watching the new Hindi series Do Gubbare which is now streaming on Jio Cinema. In times of thrillers and mysteries, there is still an audience that crave for feel-good dramas that one can sit back and enjoy, simply to unwind. And this did seem to be a perfect pick to unwind after a long and hard day. So then does Do Gubbare manage to impress, lets find out.

Story & Screenplay

Do Gubbare follows the story of two individuals belonging to two different age demographics that form an unlikely bond that is heartwarming. The story here strikes a chord with you on so many grounds. It addresses the cultural differences, the age difference and the different in personalities beautifully while sticking to the feel-good vibe which is honestly heartfelt from start to finish. The screenplay standing at 6 episodes of roughly 20 odd minutes each does make for a brisk watch with not many diversions, while sticking to the warm vibe of the drama.

There is a sense of sweetness to the drama right from its first frame. You are introduced to one of the protagonists who is new to the hustle of the city of Pune that plays such an important character in the drama. I personally enjoy dramas which are rooted and exude the correct vibes of the area where they are set in. And the spirit of Pune is shot wonderfully well. To give you a perspective, the opening shot features the protagonist searching for a Rickshaw while being turned down every single time. Yet, after treading a little ahead, he is given a helping hand by one of the drivers who had rejected him earlier. This did speak of the strong headed but softer vibe of the city which has a unique flavour of its own.

Soon, you are introduced to the elderly statesman in whose place the protagonist would reside. There is a subtle sense of chemistry between the two which is almost playful while being separated with respect that the two have for each other. Individually, both are loners in their own way – one having lost his spouse only months back, the other, new to the city and desperately searching for ‘his’ people. This premise is itself so beautiful wherein the two individuals bond over many aspects of life ranging from ice cream to food in general while also giving each other company through thick and thin.

The drama is predictable(majorly so) and simplistic but that is what works in favour of the drama. Through some of the other characters, the writers create an atmosphere for warmth in what was an easy going show without any conflicts(or should I say minor ones). Yet, the emotions land beautifully, often striking the right notes and hitting the strings of your heart deftly that makes the drama just so refreshing. There are smaller episodes, almost like life events that might be forgotten as we move ahead in life, but in the moment are beautiful and make you smile.

There is a thread connecting every episode but in the process, it highlights the kind of friendship and both that does go from strength to strength between all characters. A little family secret and an emotional subplot later, it is the togetherness in the drama that is celebrated while also highlighting along the way that grass might be greener on the other side, but if there is a sense of togetherness, the grass might still be greener on your side without your realisation. Overall, the screenplay is very well written with a touch of nostalgia and a hint of drama that will make you shed your tears a wee bit. But the warmth in the drama shall be prevalent throughout which would reflect in the form of a smile on your face.

Dialogues, Music & Direction

The dialogues are laced with a lot of emotions and a tinge of humour which will invariably put a wide smile on your face. The music is soothing and goes perfectly with the mood of the drama. The BGM is quite good and subtly brings out the emotions in every scene. The cinematography plays a key role in capturing the vibrant vibe of Pune in the most beautiful manner. It added to the flavour and texture of the drama pretty well. The costumes also add to the personality traits of the characters. The editing is smooth and free flowing throughout. Director Varun Narvekar does a wonderful job in tapping into some deft emotions through the course of the drama. He does balance it by addressing the age demographics while highlighting the cultural differences. What that results in a heartwarming drama that fills you with a lot of warmth. The direction is excellent here.

Performances

The performances are excellent here. The kids Advit Sood and Hetvi Sharma are charming little characters and they have their moments to shine. Manasi Parekh as Ashwini is such a fine actor that she brings out the nuances of her character beautifully despite a limited screen time. Malhaar Rathod as Manu is fabulous to watch and exudes of such positive energy. Also, she wonderfully emotes towards the end wherein the emotions touch your heart wonderfully well. Hemangi Kavi-Dhumal as Radha is endearing and sincere and she does a brilliant job here.

Siddharth Shaw as Rohit delivers a heartfelt performance. There are so many layers to his character and there are shades of loneliness to his character too. And each note in his character is expressed beautifully in a character that has such a wonderful arc. Mohan Agashe as Aazoba delivers an acting masterclass of the highest order. There are scenes wherein he has to break down and watching him cry makes you want to embrace him while shedding a tear. Such was his performance – playful but emotional in equal measures.

Conclusion

Do Gubbare is such a heartwarming series which would put a smile on your face while deftly touching the strings on your heart. The celebration of life and togetherness was never this sweet before! Available on Jio Cinema and Highly Recommended!
