Comedy Premium League

RATING
4 Star popcorn reviewss

Introduction

Onto the next release of the weekend and I have finished walking the brand new comedy reality series on Netflix called Comedy Premium League which features some of the top standup comics of our times. It was only last weekend that I had reviewed the new sketch show Chalo Koi Baat Nahi, and so this is a bit of a double whammy with another comedy show review in consecutive two weeks. To be fair, the four of the total six episodes were already aired last weekend. While I had finished binging on those last weekend itself, I was waiting for the last two episodes to air before penning my review. Now that they are out, is the show worth your time, stay tuned.

Concept

Comedy Premium League is a six part series wherein a bunch of comedians perform in a team of four with varied forms of comedy like Standup, Roast, Presentation, Debate and a Face Off. And at the end of the day, only one team can win the tournament! The concept here is similar to the tournaments in sports where at any given point of time two teams are pitted against one another. And to be honest, I really enjoyed the concept here. A mixed bag which does prevent the format from being monotonous. The rounds are fun to watch as well!

Gags And The Impact

The gags for me were extremely funny, some of them filled with quirky one liners. To be honest I was very skeptical to begin with as I wasn’t quite sure as to what to expect in such a series. It wasn’t long back when the Amazon Original Series “Lol” seemed like a major slog although the concept was promising. To my surprise, I found myself laughing hysterically on the humour that was on display. There are several memorable acts like the ‘Bat’ one or the Aakash Gupta standup or the one when Sumukhi and Sumaira feeding off each other. Here I would like to say that some of the jokes were borderline cringy and there would be a section of the audience who may find the humour offensive too. But what my take is that if humour is created in the right spirit and not intended to feel offensive then I would definitely give it the benefit of doubt which is the case here for me.

Performances

The performances by all the standups are noteworthy. It has a sparkling finale act by my favourite director Anurag Kashyap which was an absolute bonus. The show was extremely well hosted by Prajakta Koli who added that vibe and zing excellently. Rahul Dua and particularly Rahul Subramaniam were hilarious, Urooj Ashfaq and Mallika Dua had their moments too. One of the standout performers was Aakash Gupta in a sensational standup that truely had me laughing hysterically. Kenny Sebastian, Kaneez Surka and Prashasti Singh were good too. Aadar Mallik and Samay Raina were brilliant as were Amit Tandon and Rytasha. But my favourite team was that of Tanmay Bhat, Rohan Joshi(yes back after AIB), Sumukhi Suresh and Sumaira Shaikh all of whom were outstanding. We all are aware of the calibre of Tanmay, Rohan and Sumukhi. But it was Sumaira who was the find of the show for me. Some of her acts were simply outstanding especially for someone who I thought was a weak link in the team!

Conclusion

Comedy Premium League is Absolutely Hilarious and definitely worth your time! Available on Netflix and Highly Recommended.
