BoJack Horseman (Season 1-6)
The mid-life crisis of a humanoid horse is woven into an intriguing story spread across 6 seasons. It has everything that a Hollywood celebrity story could have — booze, drugs, sex, and addiction. Is the first animated series of Netflix worth it? Read on to find out.
The story is about a TV actor who was successful and popular in the ’90s but is losing his fan following and thus lives a loathsome lifestyle. The story gives you a peek into the glamorous outside but the depressing inside lives of people in showbiz. Affected by his dooming career and trying to reach for salvation, the actor is trying to make a comeback helped by his assistant (read ex-girlfriend). It is great to see how his assistant and everyone else still put up with his empty tantrums and want to help him in his redemption. BoJack is an alcohol addict, and his life is a spiral of series of shadowy events.
The series also features an aspiring writer who is set out to write a biography for BoJack and ends up getting cursed with BoJack’s acquaintanceship. Others are an old friend from the Industry who is rather loved by the audiences and despised by BoJack. A flatmate who happens to be an orphan and his best friend. I love the way each character has been portrayed in the series with each of their life stories and nuisances. The writers have done great justice to all seasons where you see all the characters moving on in their personal lives and progressing in each season. The assistant is a single woman and adopts a baby. The writer travels continents to find her roots in the country she was born in and the orphaned useless flat mate finds a job, the best match for his aptitude.
The series is dark and full of the comedy of what is know as Tragicomedy. The satires are relatable and applause-worthy. One of the most intelligent and impressive writings I have ever seen. There are a lot of moments that will touch the deepest parts of your heart. You will laugh and cry with BoJack and helplessly start to love him. His conquest for finding himself again and the brilliant writing of this show is what will stay with you.
So do not get swayed by the fact that this is animated, it is better than most non-animated content that we have come across. And watch this animated series for adults today !
