Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa

RATING
3.5 Star popcorn reviewss

We are now down to the final two releases of the weekend. There was an additional release, Raat Baaki Hai, but Zee5 has now postponed its release for reasons best known to them. So, I have just finished watching Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa on Eros Now. Fun Fact – This movie was made close to 7 years ago but found no takers for a theatrical release. Does it manage to hold the test of time or is it just plain stale, stay tuned.

Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa is the story of a detective named Anwar who is on the path to self discovery through his different cases. The story is extremely niche and will not connect with everyone. But if it does manage to connect, you will fall in love with it! The screenplay is a slow burner with no sense of urgency. You are patiently introduced into the life of Anwar and the people that he meets. The unhurried pace allows you to spend time with its characters and understand them and their philosophy of life. The treatment here is philosophical and so its comprehension might vary from person to person. There is no effort is providing explanation of the proceedings and it is left to your interpretation. This is not exactly a flipside but if you are looking for any remote sense of entertainment then you ain’t finding it! The dialogues are once again thought provoking particularly towards the end, dare I say poetic too. The music and BGM are subtle but effective. Director Budhadev Dasgupta is a national award winning director and his direction is subtle in the truest sense of the word. His filmmaking technique is unlike any I have witnessed before and there is a sense of sweetness too.

The performances are outstanding. Farrukh Jaffer as the old lady is such a treat to watch, you may have seen her in films like Gulabo Sitabo and just such a pleasure watching her here. Sohini Paul as Sudha is pretty good. Amrita Chattopadhyay as Nafisa looks cute and is so affable. Niharika Singh as Ayesha lends good support in a cameo. She is understated yet brilliant. Pankak Tripathi as Amol has a miniscule role but he leaves a lasting impact. The philosophy conveyed through his dialogue is so special. The film relies on the acting masterclass of Nawazuddin Siddiqui who as Anwar is just flawless. This is the performance to literally study and savour. His endless monologues with his dog Lalu are just priceless and he deserves the highest amount of accolades for a stupendous job done!

Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa is a niche and artsy film which will not be liked by everyone, especially those who watch movies for entertainment. Yet if you enjoy abstract subjects and are a fan of serious cinema, then you will find this subtly poetic and poignant. Available on Eros Now.
