Annaatthe is a 2021 Indian Tamil-language action film written and directed by Siva and produced by Kalanithi Maran under the banner of Sun Pictures. The film stars Rajinikanth, Keerthy Suresh and Nayanthara in main lead roles while Jagapathi Babu, Abhimanyu Singh and Soori in supporting roles. The music for the film is composed by D. Imman while cinematography and editing are performed by Vetri and Ruben respectively.
The film revolves around the relationship of Kaalaiyan (Rajinikanth), a village president and his sibling, Thanga Meenatchi (Keerthy). Kaalaiyan is preparing for the wedding of her sister but as they begin to plan for her wedding, arising complications threaten to rupture their bond. The rest of the film forms the crux of the story.
Direction, Music & Cinematography
Director Siruthai Siva’s strong point is handling emotions and Annaatthe’s story does remind us of his previous film, Viswasam with Ajith. Viswasam worked big time (even with a familiar plotline) because of the depth in the lead characters. In Annaatthe, the characters are unidimensional and lack depth.
The music by Imman is pulsating and enhanced several scenes. Cinematography by Vetri aided in amping up Rajinikanth’s build-up sequences.
Annaatthe has a star studded cast, but none of them leaves a lasting impact on us. Rajnikanth and Keerthy Suresh have done well in the lead roles. However, the supporting cast members including Meena, Khushbu, Prakash Raj, Nayanthara, Abhimanyu Singh and Jagapathi Babu appear in forgettable roles.
Overall, Annaatthe had the potential to be an engaging family drama. However, the mediocrity of the script and screenplay has made this film an utter mess which even a superstar like Rajnikanth cannot save.
