Introduction

Another day and another Malayalam film impresses, well almost! The Malayalam Film Industry has been on a dream run this year with so many films that have been well received at the Box Office as well as on OTT. And with much anticipation, I decided to watch and review the new Malayalam film Abraham Ozler which is now streaming on Hotstar, in hope that this film will join the list of the Top Malayalam Films of 2024. The thing with investigative thrillers is that if well done, they have the ability to keep you on tenterhooks throughout the narrative. Having said that, the other side of the argument is that things can get repetitive in terms of the world building which after a point, may not have anything new to offer. This has also got to do with the grand revelation which can make or break the entire film. So if the grand revelation is predictable or underwhelming, it could dip the overall impact of the film. And that is something that I did feel like in Abraham Ozler, but is is still a good thriller, let’s find out.

Story & Screenplay

Abraham Ozler follows the story of a depressed cop investigating a mysterious case behind the string of murders taking place at multiple hospitals with the same kind of modus operandi. Who is the killer? The story isn’t novel at all but what again impressed me was the treatment of the thriller in terms of the world building that kept me on tenterhooks most for most parts of the runtime. The writing had the right kind of complexity to it to stimulate your cerebral senses even as you find yourself ‘aiding’ the protagonist in the investigation. However, the issue lay in the revelation and the extended flashback that lowers the impact of the film other than contributing to an additional 30 minutes in an otherwise tight screenplay of 140 minutes.

The drama begins on an interesting note with respect to the characterization of the protagonist wherein you are acquainted with the current state of the protagonist following an incident featuring his family. The entire sequence of events are thrilling that immediately suck you into the world of Abraham Ozler even before the core investigation begins. And once the string of grizzly murders begin to kick in, you are already on the ball as far as the investigation that ensues. As is the case with most Malayalam investigative dramas, the narrative is packed with a lot of detailing that in turn leads to multiple trails which is something that keeps you invested in the drama.

The proceedings are interesting and engrossing particularly when the ongoing investigation starts narrowing down to the suspects. The ambience created was wonderful while also giving the ‘suspect’ an attire that raises the excitement levels in the drama. So when there was a revelation at the halfway mark, I was curious on what would transpire next as things were setup pretty well for the second hour. The second hour doesn’t exactly disappoint too, atleast halfway through with multiple twists and turns that further engage you in the narrative. The issue creeps in with about 30 odd minutes remaining on the clock that dips the drama further.

It was a little strange for me that the grand revelation did take place with more than 30 minutes to go. And the issue for me from here on was that the drama did become predictable with even the tone of the drama deviating towards being a medical thriller. It wasn’t too hard to join the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle from there on, which meant that the writing should have contrived the extended flashback by limiting it to not more than 10 minutes(on a very generous note). An alternative to this could also have been to change the narrative structure of the film by showcasing two timelines, only for both to meet. That would have kept the ‘mystery’ around the drama longer than it eventually did. A little setup at the end does promise this film to branch out into a franchise which was a welcome move for sure. But overall, the screenplay is thrilling until the final 30 minutes kick in which kind of dilutes the overall impact of the drama.

Dialogues, Music & Direction

The dialogues are good and maintain the intensity of the drama. The music does blend well with the drama but it is the blaring BGM that heightens the drama at so many places. In fact, the BGM ensures that this is more of a stylized thriller, something that adds a different flavour to the drama. The cinematography captures some stunning frames that create an ambience of intrigue particularly when the investigation is on. The editing is good except for the final 30 minutes wherein a lot more of the drama should have been chopped off at the edit table. Director Midhun Manuel Thomas(who had directed the brilliant Anjaam Pathiraa previously) does a good job for most parts of the runtime by maintaining a firm grip on the narrative. However, he does loosen the grip in the final 30 minutes by literally spoon feeding the viewers with an extended flashback that wasn’t really required(atleast to this extent). But having said that, the direction still isn’t bad at all if I were to speak of the film in total.

Performances

The performances are quite good by the ensemble cast. I am going to keep a few character names under wraps to avoid direct spoilers. Mammootty adds a lot of star power to the proceedings and he does a great job as well. Jagadish and Saiju Kurup have their moments to shine. Anaswara Rajan has a sweet presence onscreen in a job well done. Senthil Krishna as Siju and Arya Salim as Divya are excellent additions in the screenplay and both of them make their presence felt. Jayaram as Abraham Ozler has a good screen presence and he does a fine job here. But I still did feel that someone like a Suresh Gopi would also have suited the bill for this character, which made me feel that the Jayaram didn’t quite make this character his own and unique to himself. Having said that, he still was pretty good here, overall.

Conclusion

Abraham Ozler is a thrilling investigative drama that tapers towards the end, thereby making it a decent one-time watch. Available on Hotstar.
