Introduction

Onto the next release of the weekend and I have finished watching the sole Hindi theatrical release for the weekend, Janhit Mein Jaari starring Nushrratt Bharuccha. It was during the trailer launch that Nushrratt was seen endorsing a c*ndom(censoring it only to beat the google algo). And she was swarmed with comments on her instagram which were sleazy and absolutely ridiculous. Why is it a problem if a girl has to endorse a product which is a necessity in terms of preventing STDs and the ever growing population of the country! The thinking does need to change and for that a good amount of awareness is required. And this week’s release, tackles a similar subject. So then is Janhit Mein Jaari worth your time, lets find out.

Story & Screenplay

Janhit Mein Jaari follows the story of a women having accidently found herself a job in a c*ndom manufacturing company, takes it upon herself to spread awareness about it. The story is relevant and certainly well intended. But the screenplay is where the film falters. The drama standing at almost 150 minutes is a tad too much for a subject like this. And what eventually does happen is that it goes around it circles before reaching its predictable finale. The screenplay opens on a very good note with the right dose of humour which pleasantly found me smiling and giggling. The subject which it was trying to tackle is relatively fresh having previously been seen in the Aparshakti Khurana starrer Helmet on Zee5.

As the drama progresses, the humour also keeps getting better. So what is the issue you may ask? It is the cliched writing which just wishes to drill the message home without keeping things subtle. This is a typical Ayushmann Khurana kind of a genre and if you recall his films like Vicky Donor or even Dream Girl, the message was subtle and the focus primarily was on entertaining the audience. But sadly here, the things are reversed. Make no mistake, I am all for the messaging but if the protagonist has to go about literally saying the same things over and over again throughout the film’s duration then it is safe to say that the point is lost in translation. It would make people disinterested which is what happens here!

There are still moments which are interesting but few and far between barren lands of melodrama. The writers had to be cautious of it and had to ensure of steering away from it. The finale act is also weak and the final scene of breaking the fourth wall and again preaching the message just summed up the weak screenplay.

Dialogues, Music & Direction

The dialogues are hilarious and quite sharp and they do leave the desired impact. The authenticity of the place where the drama is set in is maintained through the dialogues. The music is alright as is the BGM. Director Jai Basantu Singh does a fair job but he does get carried away with driving home the message. There are scenes where it seems the director is overcompensating and ensuring that the evident message is still spelt out. So the direction is a bit of a mixed bag!

Performances

The performances are outstanding and they make the film somewhat watchable. Veterans like Brijendra Kala, Tinu Anand and Vijay Raaz are excellent and they bring different dimensions to their respective roles. Vikram Kochchar and Girish Sharma(who plays the reporter Papan) are first rate. Paritosh Tripathi as Devi is hilarious and he nails his one-liners. Anud Singh Dhaka who was previously seen in the SonyLiv webseries Love J Action is superb as Ranjan and his flair and passion are nicely shown. Nushrratt Bharuccha as Manokaamna is excellent and delivers a very dignified performance.

Conclusion

Janhit Mein Jaari is hilarious in parts with stupendous performances but its mediocre writing coupled with high melodrama fails to leave an impact. Available in a theatre near you.
