MOOTHON

RATING
5 Star popcorn reviewss

After the emotionally draining Dil Bechara, I wished to change genres. And so for my next review of the day, I decided to watch Moothon, a Malayalam crime drama that I was eagerly waiting to release on an OTT platform. Of course, I had to watch it anyway as it was recommended by my favourite director Anurag Kashyap. And I was elated to have finally got a chance to watch it, is it worth your time, stay tuned.

Moothon is the story of an orphan out to find the ‘Moothon'(translated to The Elder One). This is all I can reveal as divulging any further details will act as a spoiler. The story is wonderful packed with real human emotions. The screenplay is just so perfectly written. In its heart, this is a gangster film yet the major reveal is so cleverly incorporated, it actually gives a whole new dimension to the genre. This, that culminates into an ending that is sure to leave you numb. Anything I say will never justify how good the writing is. The dialogues are excellent and though this is a Malayalam film, almost 60% of the dialogues are in Hindi. The BGM is outstanding that enhances the drama. A special mention of the cinematography that beautifully captures the shores of Lakshadweep islands and also contrasts it with the dark lanes of Mumbai. Director Geethu Mohandas has done a phenomenal job. Her skills are notable and one to savour as each layer of the drama is slowly peeled off.

Dileesh Pothan as Moosa is excellent in a character that has an outer hard enamour yet one who is soft on the inside. Melissa Raju Thomas as Amina impresses in a cameo. Sujith Sankar as Latheef is so well cast and his portrayal of his character is accurate(you’ll know when you watch it). Sobhita Dhulipala as Rosy is such a natural. Shashank Arora as Salim has delivered one of the more dynamic performances of his career. Excellent job there! Which brings me to the 3 main protagonists. Sanjana Dipu as Mulla has done an outstanding job in a character that requires her to internalise. And you end up empathising with the character. Nivin Pauly as Akbar has such a great range as an actor and he puts it on full display here. The very actor who played slightly mellow characters in Bangalore Days and Premam(both highly recommended) delivers such a power packed performance which also has a human touch to it. And the pick of the lot according to me is Roshan Mathew as Ameer. For the sake of the story, I will keep his character under wraps but such a heartfelt performance, it will leave you with moist eyes and a broken heart. What a performance!!!!

Moothon is probably the best film that I have watched this quarantine season. One of the best gangster flicks of all times. A modern day masterpiece! You just cannot miss this one! And I cannot emphasize more! Available on Zee5 and Highly Highly Highly Recommended!
